Discussion Questions
Here are a few questions to ponder, and discuss with your book club friends. Feel free to ask a question or leave a comment in any of the linked book discussion sites below. I’ll do my best to respond and contribute. A printable PDF version is also provided (delivered via email with sign-up).
Q. What was the underlying theme of this story? Other themes? How did the life stories of the main characters mirror this theme? How was symbolism used to portray it?
Q. Do you think the story was plot-based or character driven?
Q. While EORL is certainly a work of fiction, as are the characters, many of the scenes are based on true events. Of course, the Green River Killer investigation was real, but what else? What parts of the story do you think actually happened similarly to how they were portrayed? (author’s answer on the board below)
Q. What did you already know about the book’s subject/ setting? What did you learn? What questions did you have that went unanswered?
Q. The protagonist is widely defined as the main character, the one who drives the action, and the one who most experiences the consequences. Who is the protagonist in EORL? Who is the antagonist? Is there a case to be made that they can be reversed?
Q. Which parts of the book were most memorable? Which one would you call the story’s climax?
Q. Which characters did you like the most? The Least? What would you change about them?
Q. How did the characters change? Did your opinion of them change?
Q. What emotions did this book evoke in you?
Q. If the book were to be turned in to a movie, who would you cast to play the main characters?
Q. Did this story change you in any way? Did you learn something new? Has your attitude or behavior changed in any way?
Q. Were you satisfied with the ending? Was anything left ambiguous or unresolved?
Q. If you could ask the author one question, what would it be? (feel free to do so below)
